Netherlands Debuts in Polo Series
USA vs
Netherlands
July 10, 2010…
Portsmouth,
RI
: ….Netherlands
challenges
USA
on Saturday, July 10th making its debut in the Newport
International Polo Series.

The
Dutch team, including captain
Pablo van
den Brink
will be young and highly competitive.
“We
welcome the Netherlands, one of the newest nations to take up the sport
of polo in its 2000 year history, to
compete here in Newport, home of the first polo
club on this continent,” stated
Dan Keating, captain of the
USA
team.
Polo first appeared in the
Netherlands in 1988 in the form of an invitational tournament.
Since no Dutch polo players existed at that time, all the participating
players were foreigners. The sport took hold, and in the same year
the first Dutch polo club was established, but it was not until the
1990's that polo began to thrive, with additional polo clubs and
tournaments around the country. Today there are 67 registered
players among 4 clubs in the Holland region of the Netherlands, that
organize over 30 annual tournaments from April through September.
|
"We
have a very talented young Dutch National team who won the
silver medal at the European Championships 2002 in Italy and
the bronze medal at the European Championships 2005, played
in the Netherlands.
They are now off
to play in the European Playoffs of the World Championship
at Sotogrande. Every year
the number of polo players and polo tournaments increases in
the Netherlands. So we believe polo in Holland has a
great future" explains Van den brink. |
A trophy presentation
will follow the match, including the naming of the 'Best Playing Pony'
from among those lent to the visiting team
for the match.
The polo
matches take place every Saturday in June, July, August and
September on the outskirts of Newport.
Tickets to the matches are sold at the gate on the day of the match.
Tailgate picnics on the lawn are welcome with field-side admission of
$10.00 for adults, and children 15 & under are free. Bleacher
seating is also available for General Admission. Box seating
in the Subscribers Enclosure is also available for $15/person.
