United States Polo Association Women's Polo Challenge
in Newport
(Glen Farm, Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island)
The United States Polo Association (USPA) based out of Lexington,
Kentucky, the official governing board of sanctioned polo events in
the United States, has chosen the Newport Women's Polo Association,
an affiliate of the Westchester Polo Club, to host the 2000 Northeast
Circuit Women's Polo Challenge at Glen Farm in Newport County, Rhode
Island.
The tournament will take place over the course of two days October
6 and October 7 and is open to the public. The Challenge features
32 women polo players from Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York,
Massachusetts and as far away as England. Kate Jennings and
Jacki Shore of Newport will play in A flight teams, vying for
the USPA championship. Players will play in one of two divisions determined
by the team's cumulative USPA ratings.
The championship matches will be played on Saturday, October 7 on
the Newport International Polo Series field at Glen Farm. The
first match will begin at 3 pm and the second at 4 pm.
A grand ceremony and celebration will follow immediately after the
Championship Match trophies and mementos will be awarded to the winning
teams as well as Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Polo Pony
in both divisions.
Polo is a sport of finesse and agility, and can be played by both
women and men at equal levels. Women are becoming more and more visible
on the international polo scene. Just ten years ago women represented
only 10% of the polo playing population, today 20% of the membership
is made up of women players. (cont'd) |
