NONE IF BY FIELD Byfield Polo Club of northern Massachusetts was no match for Newport on Saturday, Sept. 23, losing 15-7 to the home team in the Newport International Polo Series. Jim Zinsky was the leading scorer for Newport, playing in the #2 position, with a career high 6 goals, including three in the opening chukka, two more in the third and one in the fifth chukka. Alternate in the #2 position was Dave Bullis who scored a pair of goals in the second chukka and one in the fourth. In the #3 position, Jonathan Kaye produced two merciless goals in the sixth chukka, as well as single goals in the second and fifth chukkas. Julie Nelson, who alternated in the #1 position with Dave Markell, scored in the third chukka. Jackie Shore, playing defense in the #4 position, scored in the final chukka. Byfield led off with a 2-goal handicap which carried them until Wayne Gordon, playing in the #2 position, added a point in the second chukka and another in the fifth. Ted Ayres also scored in the fifth chukka, from the #4 position, as did Cathy O'Rourke from the #3 position. Cindy Daukins played alternate in the #3 position. Mark Wright, playing in the #4 position, scored in the sixth chukka. The #1 position was held by Jim Jones. With three fast goals in the opening chukka, Newport quickly erased the 2-goal handicap given to Byfield at the start of the match and took the lead, 3-2. The advantage multiplied with three more Newport goals in the second chukka to Byfield's first goal, making the score 6-3. Newport maintained the pace with three more goals in the third chukka to end the half, 9-3. Byfield was quiet in the fourth chukka while Newport's alternates tacked on another point, to pad their lead, 10-3. It was Byfield's alternates who ignited the team in the fifth chukka producing three goals, but Newport continued to prey on their opponent with two more goals, maintaining their dominance, 11-6. In the final chukka, Newport unloaded three more goals on the fledgling club from Massachusetts who defiantly added a last goal before succumbing to the 15-7 routing. The Newport International Polo Series continues with two remaining weekends left of competition in the 2000 season. Coming up on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 4:00 p.m. is the Newport Cup featuring the Newport Polo Club.
