Newport vs Crisp

NEWPORT STALE AGAINST CRISP

Newport was defeated by locally sponsored Crisp International 5-3 on Sunday, September 10 in a rescheduled match after a thunderstorm minutes before the start of the match on Saturday forced the 4th ever rainout in the 10-year history of the Newport International Polo Series at Glen Farm.

Crisp was lead by captain Chip Steigler in the #3 position whose attacks on Newport resulted in goals in the second and fourth chukkas. Dave Bullis, playing in the #4 position, scored in the opening chukka. Brook Pastore added a point in the fourth chukka while alternating in the #1 position with Jason Tunik who scored in the final chukka by converting an undefended penalty -2 shot on goal from 30 yards. Ted Torrey made a cameo appearance in the #2 position.

Newport's captain, Dan Keating, playing in the #3 position, turned up the heat and scored in the fourth and fifth chukkas. In the #2 position, Jackie Shore put Newport on the scoreboard with a goal in the second chukka. Julie Nelson played in the #1 position and Leonard Nihan rounded out the squad in the #4 position.

The match featured three of Newport's up-and-coming women players. Newport played a close match against their more experienced rivals throughout most of the dual. Both teams were strategically weighted in defense, resulting in well-executed steals, many foiled attempts on goal, and back and forth action. Crisp took the lead with a goal in the opening chukka. Each team gave up a goal in the second, maintaining a one-point lead for Crisp, 2-1. The third chukka was all trench warfare, keeping the score constant at 2-1. In the fourth chukka, play became more aggressive offensively and Crisp edged further ahead with two goals to Newport's one, for a score of 4-2 in the visitors' favor. In the fifth and final chukka, as determined by umpire Jonathan Kaye's evaluation of field conditions, the match was decided as each team added a point to their totals, resulting in a 5-3 victory for Crisp International. Guest commentator was polo legend and CEO of Crisp International, William Crisp.

The Newport International Polo Series resumes at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 16, at historic Glen Farm in Portsmouth when USA faces the last international challenger for the season, Canada. For more information, call 846-0200.
