Jamaican
Jerk Dinner Offered After International Polo Match
One
of the premier matches of Newport
International Polo Series will feature
USA
vs. Jamaica, followed by an authentic Jamaican Jerk
Dinner on Saturday, August 18th.
August
is the month that Jamaica celebrates its independence from Britain. The
'jerk' tradition began
over a century ago, when a group of Jamaican slaves called
the "maroons" fled into the Blue mountains, evading British
troops. They survived by rubbing indigenous allspice, blazing hot
Scotch bonnet peppers and fresh thyme into pork and chicken. They then
used the branches of the allspice trees to slow-smoke the meat for
hours. They called the spicing and the cooking method
"jerk" and the tradition carries on with great appeal to locals
and visitors alike!
The meal, including meats, traditional side dishes and dessert, will be served field-side,
under the main tent at the Newport International Polo Series, following
the USA
vs. Jamaica match, and is catered by Tina's Caribbean Restaurant of
Providence. Both teams will be in attendance. Jerk Dinner
tickets
are $35/person and can be purchased with a credit card by calling
401-847-7090 or by mailing a check to: Newport Polo, 2503 East Main Road,
Portsmouth
,
RI
02871. Seating is limited, and all reservations must be paid in
advance, no later than Aug. 14th. Cash bar. Polo match
tickets sold separately at the gate.
The
polo match begins at 5pm on the polo grounds of Glen Farm on route 138 in
Portsmouth
,
RI
and will be approximately 2 hours in duration, followed by the Jerk
Dinner.
One of the highlights of the season, this annual rivalry will feature Team
USA
playing against
Jamaica, one of the most popular visiting teams in the Polo Series.
